Margaret MacDonald (MacIntosh) was a famous scotish artist and designer. Both she and her sister Frances studied at the Glasgow School of Art in the late 1800s. She (and her sister were part of the group called the Immortals and the smaller artist group called The Four. The members of the four became two couples (Frances MacDonald and Herbert McNair, Margaret MacDonald and Charles MacIntosh). Both artist groups were inspired by nature, celtic mythology and fairy tales.
Margaret MacDonald worked with her husband together in their studio from 1896 on, they had major works and exhibitions in Glasgow, Vienna, and Turin. The two collaborated closely and Charles often shared the credit with his wife, which was unusual for the time.
The work can be considered both Arts and Crafts as well as Art Nouveau—where it is often placed due to the large number of art works in the Viennese Succession.
