The “spacemats” were created in the second collaboration between Jayme Odgers and April Greiman, after they had already designed a flyer for CalArts years earlier.

The inspiration for this work lay in Odgers' portfolio. He laminated his collages to combine the individual components into one work. When Greiman saw them, she commented: “These look good enough to eat off; they’re placemats!”

They sold them internationally under the name “Visual Energy.”

“Spacemats were like placemats, only they were our photographic or collage images, offset printed and laminated,” said April Greiman.

Today, the spacemats can be found in major institutions such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Yale University Art Gallery, and the Museum of Art of the Rhode Island School of Design. (kl)
