Tokyo Olympics 1964 – Posters
Designers
Yūsaku Kamekura
Year

1962

After being chosen to create the logo for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, Yūsaku Kamekura went on to design a poster series for the event.

The poster “Starting Line”, released in May 1962, showcased athletes launching from the starting block against a black background with striking gold typography. American servicemen and amateur Japanese athletes modeled for the shoot, which required precise planning and multiple false starts to capture the perfect moment.
It, as well as the other two posters, “Butterfly Swimmer” and “Torch Bearer”, were created using multi-color photogravure printing, highlighting Japan’s technological advancements and earning numerous design awards. (ss)
