Felice Rix-Ueno

1893

1967

Felice Rix-Ueno was an Austrian artist and designer renowned for her fusion of Western and Japanese aesthetics.

She studied for three years at the Kunstgewerbeschule Wien (Vienna School of Arts and Crafts) under prominent figures such as Oscar Strnad, Adele von Stark, Rosalia Rothansl, and Josef Hoffmann. After completing her studies, Rix-Ueno worked at the Wiener Werkstätte.

Even early in her career, her mentors noted her distinctive style, which showed a remarkable resemblance to Japanese art. This influence would permeate her entire body of work, blending European design sensibilities with traditional Japanese aesthetics.

In 1925, she married the Japanese architect Isaburo Ueno. The couple moved to Kyoto in October of the same year, and in March 1926, they opened their own architectural studio. Despite relocating to Japan, Rix-Ueno frequently returned to Vienna, continuing her work with the Wiener Werkstätte until its dissolution in 1932.

From 1949 to 1963, she held a position as a professor at the Municipal College of Fine Art in Kyoto. Her work, characterized by its clean lines, bold colors, and seamless blend of Eastern and Western elements, remains influential in both European and Japanese art circles. (hs)
