Karel Teige was the driving force in the Czech avant-garde art and design scene and member of the the Devětsil, and editor and designer of the group’s monthly magazine ReD Revue Devětsilu. Based in Prague he brought many great designers, artists and architects to the city. His contacts and social and artistic connections are an integral part of his career. For example there are many photos of him and the (transgender) artist Toyen (aka Marie Čermínová), all this show him to be an open an curious individual. He and Jan Tschichold corresponded and exchanged design work. He was also friends with the second director of the Bauhaus (Hannes Meyer), and lectured there in 1929 and 1930. He wrote the architectural theory book Minimum Dwelling (published in 1932), which was translated into English by the MIT Press many years later.
