Susan Kare

1954

Susan Kare is an American graphic designer and a pivotal figure in the development of computer iconography.

In the 1980s, she designed the pixel-based icons and typefaces for the Apple Macintosh, including some of its most recognizable elements that defined the Mac’s friendly and approachable interface. Icons like the lasso, paint bucket, and grabber tool became iconic, with variations of them still in use in computer graphics today.
In 1986, Kare joined Steve Jobs at NeXT Computer as its tenth employee. Later, she founded her own studio, Susan Kare Design, where she spent decades crafting intuitive design solutions for numerous clients.

Since 2015, Kare has been the Creative Director at Pinterest. (ss)
