engraving
Engraving is a printmaking technique in which a design is incised into a hard surface, typically metal, using a sharp tool called a burin. The engraved lines hold ink, which is transferred to paper through high-pressure printing. Unlike relief printing, where the raised areas create the image, engraving is an intaglio process, meaning the ink sits in the recessed lines. The plate is first coated with ink, then wiped clean so that only the engraved lines retain ink. When pressed onto damp paper, the ink is pulled from the grooves, producing a crisp, detailed print. Engraving has been widely used for book illustrations, banknotes, and fine art prints.
