De Stijl
ca.

1917

1931

The De Stijl (the style) movement is a close cousin to the Constructivist movement. Both originate in the art movement Cubism and both are radical in their rejection of representationalism. Indeed Piet Mondrian’s paintings are abstract in nature, although they started from representation (as does cubism). Theo and Nelly van Doesburg are major players and van Doesburg’s work and presence had a profound influence on the Bauhaus in Weimar.

While the ideas and architecture may seem more normal to us now, at the time people had a very strong adverse reaction to the designs of Garrit Rietveld.

The photo of Nelly van Doesburg, Piet Mondrian and Hannah Hoch shows how the artists of the Dada (and Constructivism) closely intermingled and often collaborated.
