cmElizabeth Colwell is one of very few women to design type. Her Colwell Handletter (in roman and italic) for the American Type Founders (ATF) massive 1923 specimen book (with over 1000 pages) is a notable exception. Colwell’s contemporaries (Goudy, Dwiggins) are better known, but not necessarily better designers. The typeface echoes an Arts and Crafts tradition, and is also a testament to her skill as a handletterer, and as an artist overall.
