Willem Sandberg’s Experimenta Typografica was a deeply personal, typographic series created during his time in hiding from the Nazis during WWII. It was during this time that he made the first of his experimenta typographica, hand-made booklets in which he collected inspirational quotes from his wide reading, and to which he added his comments in writing and in typography. Living under a false identity, Sandberg used limited and often improvised resources to reflect on philosophy, art, and the human condition, themes that would shape his later work as director of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. The Experimenta Typographica consisted of 19 hand-made pamphlets combining quotes from figures like Confucius and Stendhal with Sandberg's reflections and striking typographic layouts. Unable to use traditional materials, he creatively utilized scraps like wallpaper and cardboard, crafting a minimalist yet expressive design style that anticipated elements of postmodernist design, like layering and bold color usage. He made twelve of the eighteen experimenta typographica in the period from December 1943 to December 1944.(hs)
