The "Gismonda" poster, created by Alphonse Mucha in 1894, is one of his most iconic works and a significant piece in the Art Nouveau movement. Commissioned by the renowned actress Sarah Bernhardt to promote her play, the poster marked Mucha's rise to fame. Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923) was a French stage actress, often referred to as “The Divine Sarah.” Born Henriette-Rosine Bernard in Paris, she became one of the most famous and highly regarded actresses of her time. Depicting Bernhardt in the title role, Mucha's design features elongated lines, intricate patterns, and a halo-like arch framing her head, which became signature elements of his style. The poster's romanticized portrayal of the actress, with flowing garments and a serene expression, captivated audiences. In fact, Mucha's "Gismonda" poster was so popular that people tore it from walls to take it home. Impressed by the overwhelming success, Sarah Bernhardt signed a six-year contract with Mucha, solidifying their collaboration. This not only established Mucha's reputation as a leading artist in Paris but also cemented his distinctive aesthetic that would define Art Nouveau. (MS)
